THE FOUNDERS OF SHEPHERDS FIELD: Gerrie Cronje is the founder and heart of Shepherd’s Field Rehabilitation Centre. Coming from a military background and many years service on the Provincial Substance Abuse Forum in Port Elizabeth he has always felt the calling to help those in need. As ordained pastor and a true follower of The Lord he has made a great impact on the lives of many people caught in the grip of addiction. His belief that all people, even those that society has rejected because of their addictions, are just as important as those referred to as “normal” in the eyes of society. This is only one example why he is such a special person. He believes in the greater good of all mankind and is a true humanitarian at heart. Giving someone a second chance and not judging any on past mistakes he provides patients with a father-figure that most of them have lacked in their lives. Treatment Programmes Elim Clinic provides in-patient treatment for people eighteen years and older who are addicted to: Alcohol 3 – Week in-patient treatment Drugs 4-5 Week in-patient treatment Prescription and Over the Counter Medication 4 Week in-patient treatment Gambling 3 Week in-patient treatment The treatment period can be adjusted to meet the needs of each patient. The treatment approach is multi-dimensional and facilitated by a multi-disciplinary team. Medical Treatment The treatment program includes: Detoxification based on the primary drug of choice Methadone maintenance treatment Consultation with General Practitioner 24 Hour medical care & assistance Consultation with Psychiatrist on recommendation of the multi-professional team Drug test on admission, as well as random drug testing Dispensing of patients chronic medication as prescribed. Patients are requested to bring with all the medication they are using-prescribed and over the counter. The Centre Of Hope

At The Centre Of Hope, our program is all about getting back to basics. More often than not people that come from backgrounds of addiction or dysfunction have simply lost the ability to function normally within society. We try and teach our residents basic life skills through various therapeutic duties, such as making their beds, keeping their own area tidy, doing laundry, learning to cook as well as cooking meals, and the general upkeep of the Centre. Throughout the day there are classes where the residents are taught a number of different courses after that there are workstations where the residents are required to work around the Centre and farm. The residents are also taught how to deal with others in a sober manner, as well as how to deal with conflict situations. Every resident is required to write a life-story detailing events in their lives. This helps with identifying potential problem areas which can then be worked through during the counseling process. They are also required to keep a daily journal of their time spent here at the Centre. Church services are given every Sunday, as well as two Praise & Worship sessions a week.
